Language Arts
The Language Arts curriculum at Cohen Hillel Academy helps students learn to read, speak and write effectively so that they will be able to understand the past, and explore the future with confidence, responsibility and responsiveness. Students will develop proficiency, understanding, and knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Systematic skill development in these areas will enable students to understand other content areas, and provide them with the necessary tools to obtain, explore and analyze information across disciplines and in society as a whole. The Language Arts Curriculum seeks to:
- develop fluent readers
- enable students to communicate clearly, coherently, and effectively in both oral and written form
- provide opportunities for students to explore the various uses and functions of language, and to develop an appreciation and command of them
- show how literature can be used to gain an understanding of people, places and events, and to gain an appreciation of cultural and ethnic traditions throughout the world
- enable students to apply critical thinking and reflective skills to their reading, writing, speaking and listening
- provide an environment that promotes enthusiasm for lifelong learning by reading, speaking and writing
- enable students to maintain effective communication skills in an increasingly technological world
