Upper School : Pamela Aranov

Pamela Aranov is a true Bostonian with the accent to prove it. A graduate of Girls’ Latin School, UMASS Dartmouth and Hebrew College, Pamela has been teaching Hebrew language and Jewish studies for almost all of her working life. She credits her love for Hebrew to her sixth grade teacher, Rose Bronstein, who inspired her to pursue teaching as a profession. A year in Jerusalem at Hebrew University gave her the fluency and passion that she brings to her lessons. When not working with her eighth graders, Pamela enjoys teaching Torah trope to fifth graders.

In her spare time, Pamela is an avid sailor and swimmer. She is a certified sailing instructor and ran an inner city sailing program for kids for four summers at Piers Park in East Boston. In the summers, she sails with her husband, Josh, and dog, Suzy, along the northeast coast. Her longest voyage was from Bermuda to Cape Cod.

Upper School : Margarett Ardman

Margarett Ardman has worked at Cohen Hillel in many capacities- the activity room teacher in kindergarten, seventh grade math teacher, a member of the learning center staff, and most recently as the science teacher for both sixth and eighth grades, and the sixth grade math teacher. She has a master’s degree in special education from Salem State College. She spent last summer volunteering as a special educator at the Ford school in Lynn.

This, however, was not how she started her adult career. Margarett graduated from Salem State College with a BS in Biology, with minors in chemistry and psychology. She worked as a laboratory technician at Tufts/New England Medical Center where she managed the allergy department’s clinical and general research laboratories. This work resulted in several papers published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and most impressively Nature.

Margarett has an avid interest in all things mechanical from computers to toasters. She currently runs a robotics club after school, allowing her to play with programming and designing. Her other interests are horseback riding (she just started taking western riding lessons) and most important to her are her three children.

Upper School : Polly Conti

Polly Conti has been teaching language arts and social studies in grades six, seven and eight at CHA for eight years. She has been an educator at the middle school level for her entire teaching career which spans 25 years. A graduate of Smith College in English and Psychology, Polly began teaching English at the Pine Cobble School in Williamstown, MA. and was an advisor to the yearbook and drama programs. She then taught for eight years at the Pike School. She was both the English Department Chairperson and the advisor to the drama program. During this period she pursued a master’s degree. Following a five year hiatus to raise her new baby daughter, Polly moved to Boca Raton and took on a teaching position at the Pine Crest School. She taught English as a Second Language to their students from European countries and South America and eventually became the seventh grade English teacher. She involved herself in many extracurricular activities at Pine Crest, spending time in the video lab, presenting the spring musical and becoming involved in student government. Twelve years flew by, and Polly missed New England. When her daughter went off to college she moved back to a family home in Rockport and discovered CHA. At Cohen Hillel currently, Polly is teaching sixth grade language arts and seventh grade language arts and social studies. She is the supervisor for the induction program for the mentoring of new teachers and is also the Language Arts and Social Studies Curriculum Advisor in the upper school.

Polly does have a life beyond teaching. She has renovated her family home in Rockport by the sea and loves the tranquility of her ocean retreat. Some of her spare time is spent working out in a desperate attempt to stay intact for a few more years. She is also a member of several book clubs, and shares with her seventh graders a love of computer games. She is most proud of her wonderful daughter and stepdaughter. Both 26, both in graduate school, they make her so proud on a daily basis that she can hardly contain herself. Teaching keeps Polly young, and she honestly looks forward to coming to work every day. When her students move onto eighth grade, she reminds them that they spend one year in seventh grade, but she remains there forever.
